Our Projects

Find out how are we reducing water consumption, leakage and costs.

Multi Annual Rural Water Program:

The MARWP is funding mechanism by which the Group Water Schemes have an opportunity to secure funding to progress works that require attention.

The GWS will put together a program of works and submit to the Local Authority. The National Federation of GWS’s and the Local Authority will make a submission to the Department of Housing, and a decision is made on the amount of funding made available to each GWS.

In 2024 West Limerick GWS put a program of works together to a total value of €1,500,000. The Scheme was awarded €1,400,000 for various projects.

Granagh Water Supply:

Granagh amalgamated with West Limerick GWS in 2020 and were having difficulty with leakage and the main supplying Kirwan’s Reservoir. As the scheme had funds in reserve it was decided to lay a new rising and distribution main. The works were done in a very short time. Total amount of pipe re-laid was 1.344km at a cost of €124,482.

This work has proven to be tremendous success.

Constant leakage was re-occurring on another section from Ballinlena 800m in length and this was replaced in 2021 at a cost of €80k.

Funding was granted to West Limerick GWS in 2025 under the Multi Annual Rural Water Program which enabled the Scheme to replace another 2km of main. 1.45m was replaced from Balinlena to beyond the Handball Alley in Kilmore. Another 550m was replaced from Chawke’s Cross towards Liskennett.

Another 600m is planned to start from the Church in Granagh towards Kilmore in March/April 2026.

Total costs of these project’s will be €350k approx. All these works were done by directional drilling and welded joints. Very little damage to road surface.

Total spend in Granagh since amalgamation will be €482,482 with 4.74km replaced.

These works have made a major reduction in usage and repair costs. The daily consumption at present is 170m3/day and storage of 400m3.

Cappagh Water Supply:

At present 350m of 50mm main is being replaced in Ballyadam. It was the only 50mm main on the Cappagh Scheme. Funding again made available under the MARWP. The grant was €80,000 approx.

Further funding was made available for fencing of the reservoir in Cappagh. The tress were cut along the roadside of the reservoir and a new fence installed by FRS Fencing.

A protective bund was made around the Priest’s Field Pumping to protect the sources from any surface water infiltrating the wells.

At present the Rosemount source is undergoing refurbishing works and the borehole will be relined with all the modern techniques.

Croagh Water Supply:

As the Department are encouraging schemes to link up as far as possible it was decided in 2020 to look at the possibility of linking Cappagh and Croagh. A submission was made to the Department, and funding of €399,000 was made available under the MARWP in 2024 to link the 2 schemes. The main was 2.1km in length and was done by Directional Drilling. The main was laid under the rail crossing in Knockdromin and progress was slow due to issues with CIE. The main is live since February 2025 and supplying part of Croagh. The hope is Croagh will be fully supplied by Cappagh in 2026.

An extra 22 householders on the route of the link expressed their wish to join the scheme and are now members of West Limerick GWS.

Funding was also granted in the 2019-2021 MARWP to extend the Croagh Scheme on the Ballingarry side of Croagh. The works went to tender and 400m of main was laid at a cost of €59,541. This was all done by directional drilling.

Killeedy Water Supply:

As Killeedy is the largest of the 4 schemes it also has the largest amount of old 50mm main. When we made our submission to the Department for funding under the MARWP we were very conscious of the condition of the mains in Killeedy and we sought funding for over 4km of main.

In 2024 Limerick City & Co Council informed the GWS that a new road surface would be laid from Kantoher Cross to the new KCS Facility. We immediately sought funding from the Council to replace this section of main. The Council granted the GWS €48,000 to do the works.

When the works were complete, we decided to continue the main to Twomey’s Cross as we had the contractors onsite and it was a poor section of main. Meters and valves were installed at Twomey’s Cross.

Total cost of the works was €220K.

Under the MARWP we were granted €650K to replace old mains in Killeedy GWS. These works are about to start in April/May 2026.

The planned works are from Connell’s Cross to the crossroads at Keatings Shop and from Kantoher Cross to Ambrose’s Cross and extending to the Ballylanigan and Ballykenny Junctions.

The next section will be from the eastern side Ashford to Twomey’s Cross and are planned to start in July/August. Total length 1.4km.

If any extra funding is available, it is hoped to replace some more mains in Killeedy area.

Killeedy will be the priority going forward.
